Description
When I began this painting I deliberately had no idea at all in my mind of where I was going with it. This is a rare way of working for me.
I began by putting on my favourite World Music, mixing several bowls of liquid paint, laying the canvas on the floor and dancing around it whilst throwing the colours on. Then while the paint was still wet I picked up the canvas and continued to dance – tilting and turning it and letting the paint run and change directions. When the paint had dried I selected the areas that interested me most and blocked out the remainder in a semi-opaque white. Again, from those semi- opaque areas I chose the most interesting parts and blocked out the remainder in a variety of solid greys. From there on I carefully developed and enhanced certain areas and natural markings with sgraffito, layering and texturing techniques and raised areas of impasto with tinted ridges. Finally I gilded on silver-leaf in square shapes and glazed them with transparent layers of warm colours to bring in reflections of light.
And so what started as entirely free-form and unstructured became increasingly complex, multi-layered and directed as it evolved. The open structure allows the eye to dance not only across the surface but into and through the layers giving a feeling of exploration and participation.
The title comes from a term used by the channelled entity “Seth” back in the 1960's to describe how hidden realities can sometimes 'bleed- through' into our normal, consensual reality.
