Description
Magic number squares appeared millennia ago in several cultures. The 3 x 3 version is the simplest but theoretically there's no limit to their size. They can begin on any number but must then run sequentially – arranged in such a way that vertically, horizontally and diagonally they add up to the same number.
An emperor in ancient China noticed that the pattern formed when a line is drawn through the square in numerical sequence, mirrors the path that the planet Saturn takes through the night sky, as viewed from earth – sometimes moving 'retrograde' and sometimes 'direct'.
The numbers of the magic square in this painting add up to zero.
The first version that I painted was commissioned by my doctor and good friend in Trinidad. He was doing a great deal of research into the energy matrices created by different number squares and wanted a creative interpretation of the 'Zero Number Square'. The numbers run from minus 3 through zero at the centre to plus 3. Here, I've depicted minus numbers in silver-leaf. Zero in this version - influenced by my interest in physicist Nassim Haramein's work - is represented by a simplified 2D version of the Isotropic Vector Matrix, which has at its centre a 'singularity'.
It goes without saying that this image acts as a magical key!
