Artist's Description
One of my companions in my life as a recluse in Tobago's rainforest was a beautiful black mare named Kalakunjin. She and I often roamed together on adventures through the forest. Our relationship was wildly magical. The warrior here is the archetypal Spiritual Warrior – carrying not a spear but a shamanic staff of wisdom with the head of an eagle as totem.
The sgraffito markings are taken from shards of Amerindian pottery I'd found on the island and from African carvings of the peoples who came as slaves to the Caribbean. There's something of an ancient Greek feel to this painting too. A convergence of cultures along with that which is deeper than culture.
