Description
The Sanskrit word 'Anupravishta' translates as 'interpenetrate' and in the context of this painting refers to the mystical idea that all realities interpenetrate and contain each other. This is a very ancient concept that occurs for example in the Avatamsaka Sutra but also in some contemporary interpretations of Quantum Mechanics and Unified Field theories.
There's an accentuated 'other-worldly' feel to this piece evoked by the matt apricot sky and huge solar disc (enhanced by a highly glazed surface) and the central band of complex colour flows which could be a distant nebula with stars and possibly even galaxies forming inside. This central band also resembles the coastline of Tobago as seen from high above.
The impasto foreground is cool and still. While the flowing area above in shades of jade feels very exciting to me and brings to mind a recurring dream I have of blissfully swimming at great speed in a warm inland sea that incongruously flows downhill but never diminishes.
I first came across the word Anupravishta in the 1990's in an ancient meditation text. It so galvanized me that I titled a solo exhibition held in Port of Spain “Interpenetrate”.
