Description
This image came to me in a dream. I awoke with it fully formed and complete in my mind. Not only the exact look of it but also its meaning and the the method of creating it.
I really enjoyed painting this with the many interesting and sumptuous contrasts of simplicity and complexity, texture and colour. The two bold, sensuous, broad black brush strokes were painted in a zen-like meditative state whereas picking out the ridges of the thick black impasto in turquoise required a very light and fluttery touch. The incredible delicacy of the gilded spheres tinted with multiple layers of coloured glazes was technically quite difficult but very rewarding. To achieve the exact richness and depth of orange took a gradual build up of about 15 coats, each one a slightly different colour but when it became exactly right (as in my dream) I felt is physically in my body as delight.
