Description
This large painting took over a thousand hours to complete and pushed me to my physical limits. The idea of using rock strata, veins of precious gems and 'the mother-load' as a metaphor for searching for trails leading to that which is 'true' and 'beautiful' came from reading Greg Egan's brilliant book “Diaspora”. In his case the 'mining' was for the truth of beautiful mathematical formulae. Here a similar aesthetic value is used to explore visual formulae that evoke a feeling of deep quest for hidden secrets.
If you stare for a while at the jewel circles within the womb/egg-like cave of the 'mother-load' and then suddenly shift your gaze to the right, you'll see an after-image of the circles superimposed on the darkness of the cave. This is in addition to the faint circles that are painted in. The effect was totally unexpected and I only noticed it when the painting was finished and hung on the wall. For me it adds yet another aspect of magic to a many-layered, complex and deeply intriguing painting.
